GREG – Student Success

On October 31, 2008, Greg Bramwell (former student of METI) from the Safety Services location in Fort St. John, BC was rewarded by Robert MacPhail (Manager) for an outstanding safety rescue in the field.

Greg Bramwell is a Safety Supervisor and was at a remote Northern location when an incident occurred. While venting between two tank trucks, an unexpected chemical reaction produced H2S gas. Both operators of the trucks were knocked down due to this gas. Greg's quick thinking saved both of their lives. Thank you Greg!

ERIKA – Student Letter

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the delay, but I would just like to inform METI that I am currently in Edmonton, Alberta. I am working for a worldwide company called Golder Associates; it truly is a great company. My position is heath and safety technologist. My duties include inspecting low, moderate and high risk jobs (asbestos-containing materials). I also do air monitoring.

I would like to thank METI for everything they have done for me last year and helped me get the initiative to better my lifestyle. I truly love Alberta and suggest maybe encouraging more people who take the course to relocate here. There are a lot of job opportunities in Alberta. I have to go to site now to do an inspection but I would just like to thank everyone at METI again for all of their help and support.

Best Wishes,
Erika

Hi Joe,

Just on your website again and can’t wait to take more courses as I see you’ve added more. I am currently under transfer with my company and will be taking a new position in Halifax as an Environmental Coordinator. I was lucky to have heard of METI, as once I received the training, it secured me the position I’m in now and allowed me the opportunity to stay in Atlantic Canada. So once I get into Halifax, I will be applying to take more of your courses to keep myself upgraded to where I need to be.

Thanks!!!

ADRIAN – Student Letter

I graduated from METI in August 2008 and shortly thereafter purchased a one way ticket to Fort McMurray. Days after landing here, all major oil company players laid off over 6000 employees. I stayed positive about the situation and decided it was time to hit the streets and knock on some doors. I walked in to the Government Bldg where I had seen a department that dealt with land and environmental issues. After speaking with the manager, he was very impressed with the schooling I received and offered me a position with the Alberta Government.

I have been working with the Government for the past year and a half and it has been the greatest experience of my life. I have had a number of different job titles here that include: land use assistant, safety advisor, land inspector, backcountry guardian. I have been riding quads, snowmobiles, and going in helicopters ever since I started.

Because the Government has had a hiring freeze for the next year, I decided to start looking for new positions. I advise all new graduates to join all career websites they can. I signed up for every company website, as well as job search websites and I’m sure I've applied to hundreds of jobs in the last year. I was offered a full time, salaried position as a Safety Supervisor for Western Canada for a company named Veolia Environmental Services.

I really suggest new graduates sign up for these websites and start notifiers on positions they would be interested in. Believe me, there are thousands of jobs available and you don’t always need to know someone. I didn’t know anyone who worked for the Gov or this new company so it shows that perseverance and personality can go a long way without having an "in". After dealing with many interviews, I can not stress enough that personality and positive attitude are the most important attributes you can provide. I was selected from 30 people for this new opportunity and I was only asked one question in the three interviews. The rest was chit chat, feeling me out to see if I fit in the company profile. I was asked,”What is your greatest attribute for this job?” My reply was, my personality is my greatest attribute and the company agreed and has offered the position. I could not have landed the interview without my education.

I would also advise that if you do have an interview, research the company, where they work, what work they do, corporate values and anything you can find. Any information on the company you have shows you are interested in them and not just looking for a job. I was a lot less nervous walking in to these interviews knowing all this information and it made a great impression on the interviewers.

I wish you all good luck in your future endeavors. As Terry and Tim will tell you, companies are not going to call you out of the blue so, apply, apply, and apply! You have to be persistent to achieve what you want. Tell Tim I would still kick his butt in tennis but I know he is scared and I hope Terry still isn’t cheering for the greatest high school team ever, Toronto Maple Leafs.

Yours Truly,

Adrian O'Connell
